Youth Bowhunter Camp Program

In the fall of 1992, then NYB Director Art Sperl gave birth to the idea that a camp for young people could help recruit new participants into the sport of bowhunting. Together with a small group of New York State certified Bowhunter Education instructors and assistance from Wayne Jones, Sportsmen’s Education Director for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, a program was developed to bring young people from all over the State to week end long camps and instruct them in the ways of bowhunting.

In the summer of 1993 this came into being. The inaugural Camp was held at Turkey Trot Acres, a hunting lodge and guiding service in Candor, Tioga County August 6th, 7th and 8th. Six NYB volunteers staffed this first ever Youth Bowhunter Camp instructing the aspiring bowhunters in all aspects of the sport. I addition to a complete New York State Bowhunter Education Course, the young people were given instruction on basic tuning of their equipment, arrow construction from the raw shaft to the completed arrow which they used on the practice range. The attendees were also schooled on the safe use of tree stands, the difficult art of blood trailing, the effective use of maps and compasses and the importance of ethical behavior when afield. The campers were also treated to a trailing demonstration by Deer Search Inc. which uses trained tracking dogs to assist hunters in recovering their game if the blood trail is lost.

Since it’s inception, the Youth Bowhunter Camp has program has grown from the one Camp in Region 7, to at least one Camp in Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Some of these Regions have hosted more than one Camp during the year. This program is provided at no cost to any young person in New York State, aged 12 through 16 years. To date, NYB has hosted more than 1000 young people in an effort to secure the future of bowhunting in New York.
